Arms shipments to Somalia condemned by Security Council.

Security Council members noted during an informal meeting on Somalia today that arms were still getting into the country "in flagrant violation of the resolution imposing an embargo," Council President Ambassador Jeremy Greenstock of the United Kingdom told journalists afterwards.

The Council wished to make public how much it condemned this, he added, and called on those responsible to stop. The matter is to be taken up by the Council's sanctions committee, he said. The Council heard a briefing by Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Ibrahima Fall, who reported on efforts to bring a peace initiative by the President of Djibouti to fruition.

The briefing also highlighted the current humanitarian situation in Somalia, according to the spokesman for the Secretary-General, who said the UN is concerned that a million people in Somalia are at risk of food insecurity and 600,000 may now require food aid.

Under other business, the Council was issuing a note on its own affairs, especially summing up agreement on how it could conduct itself more transparently in the future and bring more business into open session, Ambassador Greenstock said.
