UN condemns Somali arms exports
Friday, 31 December, 1999, 02:19 GMT
The United Nations Security Council has condemned the continuing violations of the arms
embargo it has imposed on Somalia in an attempt to end the continuing violence there.
The President of the Security Council -- the British Ambassador, Jeremy Greenstock -- said
the issue was discussed at a meeting on the Djibouti initiative on ways of restoring
central government to Somalia, which has been divided into warring fiefdoms since the
overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991.
Mr Greenstock said that the Council had noted that some parts of Somalia were beginning to
patch themselves together, but others were in a dire condition. A United Nations official
at the meeting said that as many as a million people in Somalia were now at risk of what
he described as "food insecurity" and six hundred thousand may now require food
aid.
