Puntland Beyond Comprehension By Burhan Alas <bnalas@yahoo.com>
Diasporas oblivious response to the Nairobi conference (reconciliation for Puntland) is not justifiable to my understanding, but quite measurable to the profundity of the damage caused by the prevailing political crisis in the region. Having reservations from foreign involved peace missions in Somalia is not reprehensible issue because of the past experiences. Beseeching to confine our deliberations and peace missions under our very local jurisdictions is very important matter. However, nothing could be worse than being in a state of stagnant mind and body, as in the case of Punlanders towards the stalemate situation in their region. I strongly admire the basic nature of the conference and the new initiatives appealing to high capacity intellect for genuine solutions. At this stage there is only one option and that is to fully support it with optimistic expectations. A close meaning of the Prophets saying (saw) was, "Wisdom is a missing treasure of every believer, and he seeks it from everywhere he can find it". They also say, if devil gives the right advice, its no harm to avail from it. My analogy here is not to reprimand personalities or cast doubt on the intentions of the organizers. On the contrary, Im trying to put under quarantine all negative stereotypes and rigid perceptions that might rebuke the intuition to embark on such an opportunity. The Puntland crisis is not an isolated case or simple issue, as we might think, but rather complex in nature due to the variant and wrangling political factors surrounding the environment. First of all, its a case among the general exigencies in Somalia. Secondly, there is no doubt about the presence of contending foreign mastership, Ethiopia, Arab countries and DJabbuti being in the forefront. The so-called TGS (Transitional Government of Somalia) is another perilous component, the venom-injecting apparatus that have materialized the crumbling process of the region. Immoral avaricious ex-military vagabonds (remnants of ex-military regime) used by loaded warlords, as missionaries to undertake destructive missions are also part of the problem. The Colonels (Mr. A. Yusuf) stubborn attitude and lust for power is another melancholy subject. All these were aggregated into the latter issue "the Colonel versus the Constitution". It was a local problem capitalized on by the TG! ! S in a masterminded plan to undermine Puntlands Local System of Administration. Until recently, Mr. Abdikassims vindictive campaign against Puntland was in remote obscurity in the eyes of the public. In the wake of his disgraceful repudiation of Mr. Galayr, very reliable sources have disclosed information pertinent to his secret operations deemed to dismantle Puntland's political infrastructure. The sources have confirmed that huge sums of money, $1.5 million and Somali currency equivalent to $1.7 million were channeled through business enterprises to immoral potential troublemakers. According to the information, there was a list of assassinations targeted to Puntlands most fervent critics of the TGS and the whole process that rendered it. The assassinations were stashed away in fear of political backlash. The alternative became to attack law and order by fueling clan atrocities. But the most devastating of all the tremors that hit the region was the Colonels underestimation of the magnitude of the explosive he was made to sit on. He had to choose b! ! etween two difficult choices. Either to render-void the constitution that had authenticated his presidency and the administration he brags about or accepts the defeat that drags Puntland under Abdikassims anarchy. This issue is beyond the comprehension of low-level insight. It needs vision, objectivity, sincerity, and the intellectual capacity to do critical analysis. Constitutions and governing laws are vital elements in every societys actuality, stability, and progress. But sovereignty is equally important. If you loose dominion you would not be able to safeguard neither laws nor constitutions. I hope and pray to God that this initiative will foster a way-out and quick solution that lasts forever. |
